These easy air fryer teriyaki chicken thighs have a sweet-savory takeout flavor without a complicated cooking process. Cooking the chicken in the air fryer helps the edges caramelize while keeping the inside juicy, and adding the teriyaki glaze near the end prevents the sauce from burning too quickly. We usually serve it over rice with simple veggie sides or alongside recipes like these air fryer garlic butter green beans for an easy weeknight dinner everyone actually looks forward to.

It’s also amazing for leftovers and meal prep lunches, just like these BBQ chicken breasts in the air fryer. The chicken reheats really well the next day and works perfectly in rice bowls, wraps, or salads without drying out.

Items and Substitutions

Raw chicken thighs on parchment paper with small bowls of sesame seeds and a dark sauce.
  • Chicken thighs (boneless, skinless): Better for the air fryer as they have a shorter cooking time and stay juicy. Chicken breasts can be used too but the cooking time may vary a bit.
  • Teriyaki glaze (bottled or homemade): Any teriyaki glaze will work, just make sure not to use teriyaki marinade.
  • Sesame seeds: Totally optional but my kids love the added crunch.
  • Gluten-free: If you need this quick teriyaki chicken dinner to be gluten-friendly, make sure to use a gluten-free sauce or make your own gluten-free teriyaki sauce recipe.

Flavors To Try

There’s always room to vary the flavor of the takeout-style teriyaki chicken at home. Below are a few we’ve tried and enjoyed:

  • Try a different glaze: If you’re in the mood for a variation, swap out the teriyaki glaze for a honey mustard sauce, soy sauce-based marinade, or a barbecue glaze. You can do this with air fryer teriyaki salmon bites, too.
  • Add veggies: Toss some sliced bell peppers, onions, or broccoli into the air fryer alongside the chicken for a one-pan meal that’s both tasty and nutritious.
  • Make it spicy: Add a drizzle of sriracha or chili paste to the glaze for a spicy kick to balance the sweetness of the teriyaki sauce.

Step 3: If you’re using sesame seeds or a garnish, sprinkle it on and cook the thighs for another 2 minutes.

Step 4: Place thighs on a cutting board and slice into bite-sized pieces.

Note

Avoid using teriyaki marinade instead of glaze. Marinades tend to be too watery and won’t give you that nice, caramelized coating on the chicken. Stick with a thicker teriyaki glaze for a better, more flavorful result!

Helpful Hints

Pro tip: Glaze in Layers for Maximum Flavor!

Brushing the teriyaki glaze on in stages while air frying allows it to caramelize and soak into the chicken, creating a rich, sticky coating with every bite.

Here are some helpful hints for making air fryer chicken teriyaki:

  • Pat the chicken dry: Before adding the teriyaki glaze, pat the chicken dry with paper towels to help it crisp up better in the air fryer.
  • Avoid overcrowding: For the best results, don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. Give the chicken enough space for the hot air to circulate, ensuring even cooking and crispiness.
  • Check for doneness: Use a meat thermometer to check the chicken’s internal temperature; it should reach 165°F to ensure it’s fully cooked.
  • Let it rest: After cooking, let the chicken rest for a few minutes before cutting into it to lock in the juices and keep it tender.
  • Storing: Let the teriyaki thighs cool completely before placing them in an airtight container and storing them in the fridge for 3-4 days.
  • Reheating: The best way is to warm it in the air fryer again at 350°F for about 3 to 5 minutes to maintain its crispy texture. Alternatively, you can reheat it in the microwave, but the chicken may lose some of its crispiness. If you prefer, you can also reheat it on the stovetop in a skillet over low heat, adding a splash of water to keep it moist.

Serving Suggestions

Sticky chicken thighs in the air fryer are easy to turn into everything from simple rice bowls to quick handheld meals. Below are a few ways to enjoy them:

  • Serve them over steamed rice or cauliflower rice, so the sweet-savory teriyaki glaze soaks into every bite. Or make them into a fried rice like this low-carb shrimp fried cauliflower rice.
  • Pair the chicken with broccoli, zucchini, snap peas, or stir-fried vegetables for an easy, balanced dinner.
  • Use the leftovers in wraps or pita sandwiches similar to this Greek chicken gyros recipe with crunchy lettuce, cucumbers, and extra teriyaki sauce for a quick lunch idea.

Air Fryer Teriyaki Chicken Thighs FAQs

Pin

Yes, boneless skinless chicken breasts can be used instead of thighs. The cooking time may vary slightly, so check the internal temperature to ensure it reaches 165°F. If using chicken breasts, they might cook faster, so it’s a good idea to check for doneness a bit earlier than the suggested time.

While the recipe is specifically designed for the air fryer, you can adapt it for the oven. Preheat your oven to 400°F and bake the chicken for about 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through. You can also brush the teriyaki glaze during the baking process for the same flavor profile, but the texture won’t be as crispy as in the air fryer.

While marinating the chicken is optional, it’s recommended for the best flavor. Marinating the chicken for at least 30 minutes helps the teriyaki glaze soak in, but for even more flavor, marinate for a few hours. If you’re in a rush, you can skip marinating, but the chicken may have a milder flavor.

Ingredients

  • 4 chicken thighs boneless skinless
  • 4 tablespoons teriyaki glaze bottled or homemade (do not use marinade)
  • 1/4 teaspoon sesame seeds optional

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer at 400°F and set timer for 20 minutes.
  • Place chicken in the fryer basket or tray and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Flip chicken over. Air fry for another 5 minutes.
  • Brush on half of the teriyaki glaze. Continue air frying for 5 minutes.
  • Flip chicken over again and glaze with the remaining glaze. Air fry for 3 minutes.
  • Sprinkle with sesame seeds, if desired. Air fry for 2 minutes.
  • Place thighs on a cutting board and slice into bite-sized pieces.

Notes

The longer you marinate the chicken the more flavorful it will be. However, you can also throw this together, skip marinating and still enoy it (I’ve been there!)
To cook faster, cut the chicken into bite-sized chunks.
Adding the teriyaki sauce too early can cause the sugars to darken too quickly in the air fryer. That’s why it’s added halfway through. You could glaze it one more time right before serving too.
