26+ Dinners On The Go
During busy sports season, Dinner On The Go is a given. But that doesn’t mean you have to rely on only takeout. If your evenings are filled with practices, games, and long hours at the field, these easy meal ideas and tips will help you skip the fast food line, save you money, and keep your family fueled.

After years of juggling practices, tournaments, and late evenings at the field, I’ve learned that the best dinner on the go ideas for families aren’t always just recipes you eat in the car. They’re meals you can prep ahead or pack easily to eat in the parking lot, so that you’re not scrambling for takeout when everyone is hungry, while realizing you forgot the water bottles on the counter.
Below you’ll find practical meal ideas for every type of sports night, including portable dinners, crockpot meals, make-ahead favorites, and recipes that turn leftovers into an entirely new meal the next day. They’re simple, family-friendly, and designed to help busy parents spend less time worrying about dinner and more time enjoying the season.
Crucial Tips To Survive Sports Season Without Takeout
A little planning goes a long way during sports season, and these simple tips can help make busy evenings feel much less insane.
- Use your slow cooker as a timer, not just a cooker. Prep everything in the morning so dinner is ready when you get home. If you’ll be gone all evening, switch it to the warm setting or use a programmable slow cooker that automatically changes to warm.
- Preheat insulated food containers. Eating a meal out of a thermos is a thing. And a smart one. Fill a thermos or insulated food jar with boiling water for 5–10 minutes while dinner finishes cooking. Empty it, then add hot food to help keep meals warm through practice or between games.
- Cook once, eat twice. Make extra grilled or air-fryer teriyaki chicken, ground beef in a crock pot, or shredded chicken early in the week and turn it into wraps, salads, quesadillas, or rice bowls on sports nights.
- Keep a “car dinner” bin ready. Store napkins, reusable utensils, wet wipes, straws, and a few shelf-stable snacks in a tote or basket in your vehicle. It makes those inevitable parking lot dinners much less chaotic.
- Slow cook in the van. This is a thing I have actually done. I have plugged my slow cooker on warm into the van and served the siblings while one kiddo played. It was actually a game-changer.
- Choose meals that travel well. Wraps, pasta salads like bacon ranch pasta salad with sour cream, and casseroles hold up much better than foods that need to stay crispy or be eaten immediately.
Best Grab-And-Go Dinners
Some nights, dinner needs to travel with you. These grab-and-go dinners are easy to pack, simple to eat between practices or games, and filling enough to keep everyone fueled until you finally make it home (at which point you will be asked for “Second dinner”).
These meals are easiest when you have prepped protein in the fridge, which is why we make so much shredded chicken (5-ingredient crockpot chicken) and steak bites (like these air fryer steak tips). They’re also perfect meals to be eaten in the car or on the field, as they’re mostly handheld.
Examples:
- wraps like marinated Greek chicken gyros
- sliders like these Hawaiian bread meatball sliders
- sandwiches
- pinwheels
Fast Dinners To Eat Before Practice
When you’ve got less than an hour before practice, these fast dinners come together quickly, and you can either enjoy them before you go or pack them into a thermos.

Slow Cooker Dinners
Slow cookers save sanity, or at least mine. I love that you can prep them in advance and come home to a mostly cooked dinner. These recipes can be enjoyed right after school, before practice, or you can set them to cook while AT practice so that you have something healthy to eat at 8pm when you get home.

How To Prep Once and Eat Multiple Meals
Slow cooker chicken becomes a huge staple for me during baseball season. Partially because it’s easy, and also because it can be made into so many meals.
For example, if I make BBQ chicken breasts in the air fryer on Monday and make a lot of them, on Tuesday I can have chicken Caesar wraps, and on Wednesday I can make quesadillas. Here are 5 of our favorite protein prep recipes:
- Slow cooker teriyaki chicken
- Air fryer steak tips
- Slow cooker chipotle chicken
- Green chili chicken crockpot recipe
- Slow cooker garlic steak bites
Always cook extra protein.
Wrap Up
Sports season may be hectic, but dinner doesn’t have to be another source of stress and an endless amount of takeout. With a little planning and a few go-to recipes, you can spend less time worrying about what to eat and more time cheering from the sidelines.
Of course, don’t forget that busy mornings deserve simple solutions too. For early tournaments or weekend games, prep overnight oats with Greek yogurt and frozen fruit the night before so everyone starts the day fueled and ready to go.
