Why The Recipe Works💭
Easy: There are only 6 ingredients and minimal kitchen effort to whip up these chicken legs.
Flavorful: A delicious honey mustard flavor that can be adjusted to your own tastes and preferences, just like this BBQ chicken breast in the air fryer.
Budget-friendly: Most chicken drumsticks can be found on BOGO sale throughout the month if you keep your eyes open!
Ingredients and Substitutions

- Mustard: Though Dijon mustard is used, any other mustard will work and bring out a new flavor.
- Oil: I prefer to use avocado oil for its high heat point. This is my go-to for Japanese teriyaki edamame, too.
- Chicken drumsticks: You can use the seasonings on other cuts of chicken; just know that the cooking times will vary.

Tools you’ll need
Before starting the recipe, you’ll want to have all your kitchen essentials ready. I recommend having the following items:
Flavors To Try
Below are a few fun ways to vary the taste of the baked chicken drumsticks.
- Lemon pepper: Skip the honey and mustard and toss the drumsticks in oil and lemon juice before sprinkling on a blend of sea salt, cracked pepper, and garlic powder.
- Saucy: If you love the sweet flavor, drizzle barbecue sauce over the chicken drumsticks before you bake them. Then, broil for a minute or two at the end of the cooking time for a sticky glaze.
- Spicy: If you love a kick of heat, sprinkle some red pepper flakes or hot sauce into the mix. I do this with air fryer pineapple chicken skewers sometimes.
How To Make Baked Honey Mustard Chicken Drumsticks

Step 1: Mix the oil, honey, mustard, salt, and spices in a bowl. Add the drumsticks and toss until coated.

Step 2: Place the drumsticks in a baking dish in a single layer.

Step 3: Bake for 20 minutes, then flip and bake for another 10 minutes.
Note
Use a meat thermometer to ensure your chicken drumsticks are cooked all the way through. The final temperature should be 165F. The cooking time is roughly 40 minutes, but it will depend on the size of the drumsticks.
Helpful Hints
Pro tip: Marinate If Possible
Marinating the chicken legs for even 15 minutes will bring out the honey mustard flavor so much more.
- Pat the chicken drumsticks dry before adding the sauce to help the skin crisp up better in the oven.
- If the sauce starts browning too quickly, loosely tent the drumsticks with foil near the end of baking.
How To Store Them
In the fridge: Once cooked and cooled, you can leave the chicken drumsticks intact or peel the meat off of them. Store either in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
Reheating: Reheat chicken drumsticks in the oven on low until heated through. You may need a splash of broth or water to bring back their juices. Or reheat them in an air fryer for a couple of minutes.
Freezing: You can also freeze cooked chicken drumsticks once cooled in a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months. When you need them, let them thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat in the oven.
How To Use It
These honey mustard chicken legs pair well with just about any easy side dish, which makes them perfect for busy weeknights. Below are a few ways we enjoy them:
- Served with extra honey mustard sauce on the side for dipping because, honestly, nobody ever complains about extra sauce.
- Served with simple sides like loaded smashed potatoes in the air fryer, rice, or steamed vegetables.
- Paired with fresh salads like this, a spinach strawberry salad with lemon dressing for an easy, balanced dinner.
