Is the Air Fryer Worth It for Sports Families? My Honest Take

Sharing is caring!

Yes, for us the air fryer is worth it. It’s faster than the oven for most weeknight dinners, and it’s hands-off once the basket is in. I still use the oven for some things, but on a practice night the air fryer is the one I reach for.

I’ll be honest: I didn’t buy one because I was excited about it. I bought one because at 5:45pm on a sports night I needed to have dinner on the table quickly and without me watching it.

Skewers with pieces of raw chicken, pineapple, and bell pepper are arranged on a grill tray, ready to be cooked. A plate with more uncooked skewers is in the background.Pin

What It Does Well

The biggest win is time. Chicken thighs, frozen veggies, and a batch of crispy potatoes can all go in the basket while I’m getting the kids’ shoes on or finishing a work email. I don’t stand over a pan flipping things, and I don’t pull a sheet pan out of a hot oven at 6:30 with everyone hungry.

It’s also hands-off in the way that matters for a busy family. You set the temp and time, shake the basket once or twice if the recipe says to, and you’re done. For a no-plan night, that’s the whole appeal.

Where It Falls Short

It doesn’t work for everything. The basket is small, so if you’re feeding a big team or a hungry family of five, you’ll cook in batches or splurge on a double basket air fryer, which is a game changer. Anything that needs a lot of liquid, like a big pot of soup, belongs in the slow cooker or on the stove.

I also haven’t tested every food in it. Don’t assume a recipe from the oven will work in the air fryer without changes, especially sheet pan meals. Check the time and temp, and start checking early.

Who It’s Really For

If your family is in planned-ahead mode, the air fryer is a nice extra. If you’re in no-plan mode, with thawed meat, a 6:15 practice, and about 30 minutes to get food on the table, it’s the tool that makes that possible. That’s where it earned its spot on my counter.

What I Make in It

These are the ones I make most, and each one has its own post:

Is It Worth the Counter Space?

For us, yes. I use it multiple times per week, so it’s paid for itself. If you already have a good oven and make big batches of food, you might not need one. If you’re short on time and counter space is tight, measure before you buy.

FAQs

Do I need to preheat an air fryer?

I personally preheat my air fryer most nights as I’m gathering ingredients. It keeps the cooking times accurate.

What size air fryer should a family buy?

This depends on how many people you’re feeding! I started with a small one, 6-quart, I think, and then I upgraded to the dual because I used it so much.

Can I cook frozen food in it?

Yes! It makes frozen fries and those kinds of quick meals so much faster than the oven!
